January 10th Protest at the State House against Proposition 8, DOMA

Subject: January 10th protest

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year. I'd like to remind you about our upcoming protest, planned for January 10th.

This protest is not only against the passage of Proposition 8, but against all of the anti-gay laws and legislation that have been put into effect during the last several election cycles, specifically, the Defense of Marriage Act(DOMA), which passed in congress and was signed into law by President Clinton in 1996. President-electObama has promised to repeal DOMA, but given recent developments–including the passage of Prop 8 and Obama's selection of anti-gay minister Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration–GLBTQ Americans and their straight allies cannot afford to take their rights for granted. In addition to the federal DOMA law, South Carolina has joined other states in passing an anti-gay marriage amendment two years ago.

We must remind all of our government officials, but especially President-elect Obama, to keep their promises to GLBTQ Americans. On Saturday, January 10th at noon, we will gather at the South Carolina State House in Columbia (intersection of Gervais and Main) to show local, state, and national leaders that we deserve equality and that the discrimination that has been written into the state and federal constitutions must be overturned. We will be standing along the Gervais street sign as we did last time, so please bring signs and wear all your rainbow gear. We'll also be passing around the official Join the Impact petition to repeal DOMA, which we will be sending to President-elect Obama himself.

Please join us at the State House at noon on Saturday, January 10th and make your voice heard! At our protest on November 15th, we had almost 200 people with only 48 hours notice, so we hope to have an even bigger turn out this time. Please forward this message to all the GLBTQ rights supporters and email lists you know and help us get the word out!
