GM Co-Executives Attend the Asia Inter-religious Conference on Article 9 and Peace in Asia

On November 29 to December 1, 2007, Cally Rogers-Witte and David Vargas, Co-Executives of Global Ministries accompanied Xiaoling Zhu to Japan to visit with church partners and attend a Peace Conference focused on Article 9 of Japan's constitution. The concluding statement calls on the Japanese government to honor both the letter and the spirit of Article 9 of its constitution: "to never act as an aggressor in war nor actively support any aggressor in any violent action or any action that may threaten the spirit of the preamble of the constitution, which says that all people of the world have the right to live free from fear and want." Religious leaders from Korea, Taiwan, Okinawa, Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany and Japan met to study and listen to keynote addresses and panel presentations, to discuss action plans, to pray and sing together in a peace concert and peace march. Appeals were made by participants from Burma and the Philippines to address the critical situations in their countries. The meeting was attended by 220 people. Disciples and UCC Leadership Send a Letter to GM Partners in the Middle East after Annapolis

GM Co-Executives, David Vargas and Cally Rogers-Witte, and the Disciples and UCC General Ministers and Presidents, Sharon Watkins and John Thomas, sent a letter on December 10, 2007 to Palestinian and Middle East Partners: "We write in the immediate aftermath of the Annapolis Conference here in the US, recognizing that the promise of negotiations with a goal of a Palestinian state by the end of 2008 raises hopes for you and for us.  In its mere happening, the gathering in one room of delegates from so many countries of the region with Arab-Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking as the agenda causes us to stand up and take notice.  We have been urging the US government to play a more active role in this effort for some time, and now share your hope that it will push forward persistently and fairly in the diplomatic arena to bring a true and just peace in the region to fruition.  Know that we will continue to advocate for strong United States involvement marked by commitment to the vision of peace with justice that we have shared with you for many years. GM Partner, FEPAZ in Guatemala , Shares its Goals and Projects

The Ecumenical Forum for Peace and Reconciliation (FEPAZ) is a place for Christian encounter, reflection, and action for those committed to working for peace, reconciliation, and ecumenism in Guatemala .  It takes on the challenge of maintaining the kairos of the Peace Agreements, maintaining a prophetic voice of denunciation and declaration of facts and situations of injustice, and other realities that hinder the fulfillment of the Reign of God on earth. FEPAZ seeks to be an ecumenical instrument of reflection, action, and projection where the mainline churches of Guatemala learn to become advocates of their national life through the perspectives of Christian values, the search for a common good, the construction of peace and reconciliation, and promotion of better living conditions for the Guatemalan population in the current context of globalization.
